'Once Upon A Leprechaun'
Churches Come Together For Fundraiser — And A Message

O’ it was a magnificent scene: An enchanted forest and mischievous little leprechauns in shiny gold pants. Fairies dancing as they sang lively Irish tunes. Drums, recorders, harps and pianos played in the background as adults told Irish folktales.
The play seemed fit for a king, though the act was for a far more noble cause.
A Nobel Cause
For a second weekend, Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren in Weyers Cave will host its eighth annual dinner theater, “Once Upon a Leprechaun,” at 6 p.m. March 22 and at noon March 23.
The play features nearly 40 performers from six churches. For the first time, children will take part this year with actors’ ages ranging from 6 years old to some in their 70s.
The director of the show, Lynda Sheffer, said the play’s theme is to “share and spread joy wherever you go without concern for self-interest or self-importance.”
“Ageless” Ron Reich, 61, echoed those sediments in a thick Irish accent as his character “the stranger.”
“If you’re chasing after a pocket full of gold, you may indeed get it,” he said. “But sooner or later, your pockets will be emptied again and it’s starting all over … [B]ut, if you are to spread joy, hither and yon’, without a thought for your own personal gain, then you will find that you have more than you need and you’ll never ever know scarcity again.”
Proceeds from the dinner performance will help members spread the joy by supporting church mission projects, among them — according to Sheffer — a project in Haiti. In years past, Reich said the event has raised between $5,000 and $6,000.
Pleasant Valley’s dinner theater has come a long way: The first show, said Sheffer, had six performers and only 13 diners. But in recent years, the church — which can seat up to 120 guests — has been selling out.
For adults, tickets are $20; children 10 and younger cost $10. To purchase tickets, call Peggy Huffman at 234-8142.
