'Twice Baked' Opens
Dayton Residents Get Another Option For Computer Repair
Posted: November 6, 2012
A brick building along College Street looks no different from any other in downtown Dayton.
But, tucked neatly behind the centrally-located laundry mat on Main Street, the new shop is unique for at least two reasons.
First, it’s one of only two computer repair places in town. And second, its owner was barely 20 when it opened.
Nic Harper, a 2011 Spotswood High School graduate from Penn Laird, was always the first person everyone turned to to fix computer problems.
“I’ve always liked tinkering with computer systems,” he said. “I did a lot of IT repair in class.”
The Blue Ridge Community College student, who specializes in small business and Information Technology, got together with co-owner Charles Carter to open Twice Baked Computers at 255 College St. on Aug. 1.
The business had been operating out of an apartment in Harrisonburg since the beginning of the year.
The owners build custom-made computers, sell refurbished computers and repair in-shop a number of electronics, including Apple products and smartphones.
The team also accepts old electronics as part of a free recycling program; drives of any items sold or donated to Twice Baked are cleared to U.S. Department of Defense standards.
The owners also hold weekly video game nights from 5 to 10 p.m. on Saturdays. The bright green main room with checkered flooring is home to free Wi-Fi, as well.
Carter, who moved to Rockingham County about five years ago when his father accepted a position at James Madison University, was born in Seattle and raised in Champaign, Ill. He doesn’t plan to stay put in the Central Valley.
He’s considering starting a sister shop, under the same name, in Champaign or Salisbury, Md.
“I know this shop will stay around here for while,” he said. “I might go elsewhere, but I’ll bring a shop [with me].”
