However, after her daughter — Cherish McDorman — was selected to be filmed last April for an episode of TLC’s “Toddlers & Tiaras,” Foster decided to bring in professional help.
“I figured since Toddlers and Tiaras was coming, I would get a designer to make them and it was bad,” recalled Foster. “She took our money and didn’t make [the dresses].”
With the pageant fast approaching, Foster went into a sewing frenzy, trying to create two gowns in only three days. While she completed the task, she says neither outfit was her “best work.”
“I was in the hotel room sewing and gluing stuff on her before she went on stage,” she remembered.
Though Cherish won for her age division that day, she did not take home the supreme title.
With Cherish’s debut airing on Oct. 2, Foster admits she’s a little nervous about how the whole chaotic day is going to look on camera.
“[Viewers] are going to think we are beginners or that we don’t know what we are doing — we do!” said Foster. “It’s just that all happened that day and then it took my attention away from helping Cherish because I was trying to sew everything.”
However, anytime she starts to worry, she reminds herself to have faith in her family.
“I know Cherish is normal and our family is normal, so it couldn’t be that bad,” says Foster. “I think they’re going to like our family.”
A Star-Studded Affair
To celebrate Cherish’s television debut, her family is hosting a red carpet event Oct. 2 in Grottoes.
“I’m really excited — I think it’s going to be awesome,” said Cherish, who invited her teachers and classmates at South River Elementary.
Guests are encouraged to “dress to impress” and can have their photos taken on the red carpet.
Once inside, guests will watch the show, as well as a taped showing of that morning’s episode of “Steve Harvey Show,” on which Cherish was a guest.
Cherish, who filmed her spot on The Steve Harvey Show in mid September, says it was a fun experience.
“I did the robot and the shuffle,” she recalled, adding that she had a “large crowd.”
Her mother believes performing in front of the large studio audience was a great experience for her daughter.
“She’s not nervous or shy to do anything now,” she remarked.
Cherish also isn’t shy to encourage locals to support her television debuts.
“Watch because Steve Harvey is funny and awesome” she said. “[And] watch Toddlers and Tiaras!”
