A 78-year-old man died Monday in Woodstock after an accident involving a riding lawn mower.

Shenandoah County sheriff’s deputies responded to the man’s property in the 1000 block of Wiseman Road around 2 p.m.

Lt. Darcy Dellinger, with the sheriff’s office, said the deputies found Alvin Cook underneath a lawn mower that had careened into a ditch. Dellinger said a neighbor called police after observing the crash.

Cook was transported to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Dellinger said the incident is still under investigation and Cook’s body will be transported to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.

“Everything indicates that it was an accident,” he said.

According to the obituary, published in the Northern Virginia Daily on Wednesday, Cook was a graduate of Woodstock High School and a Korean War veteran.

Cook is survived by his wife, three daughters, two sons, three brothers, 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

The obituary stated the funeral will be held Friday at St. Luke Brethren Church.
