Blazers Blast Lee

STAUNTON — Junior forward Tayler Dodson had 19 points and 15 rebounds to lead Spotswood High School to a 78-34 win over R.E. Lee in a Valley District girls’ basketball game Friday.

The Trailblazers improved to 19-1 overall, 10-0 in district play; the Lee Ladies dropped to 4-16, 0-10.

Senior guard Bailey Williams had 15 points, eight assists and eight steals for SHS.

Freshman guard Jazmine Johnson led Lee with 16 points.

EMHS Girls 57, Tandem Friends 16: Junior guard Alex Black and sophomore forward Alesha Melendez scored 12 points apiece to lead Eastern Mennonite High School to a 57-16 win over Tandem Friends in a non-conference girls’ basketball game Friday in Harrisonburg.

The Flames improved to 13-3; Tandem’s record was not available.

BC Baseball Tops ODAC Poll

FOREST — Bridgewater College edged Lynchburg and Shenandoah for the top spot in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference’s preseason baseball poll, picking up 92 points and four out of 11 first-place votes.

Eastern Mennonite, meanwhile, was selected to finish last in the 11-team league.

BC, 31-14 last year, reached the ODAC championship game in each of the last three seasons. Defending champion Lynchburg scored 91 points and four first-place votes in the preseason poll, and Shenandoah tallied 90 points and three first-place nods.

EMU, which opens its season today with a doubleheader at North Carolina Wesleyan, has a new coach – 14-year Bridgewater assistant Ben Spotts.

The Eagles return All-ODAC second-team second baseman Zach Hynes (.376 batting average) and third-team pitcher Robert Gallet (5-2, 2.93 ERA), as well as former Broadway High School star Corey Armentrout, who posted a 2.02 ERA in his freshman year at BC.
