WILLIAMSBURG — Freshman guard Precious Hall had 19 points to lead James Madison to a 68-63 win over William & Mary in a Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball game Sunday.

The Dukes, who remained in second place in the conference behind Delaware, improved to 14-7 overall, 8-1 in the CAA; the Tribe dropped to 5-15, 3-6.

Junior guard Kirby Burkholder had 16 points, 10 rebounds and four assists for JMU, which trailed 21-6 early and shot 1-of-12 from 3-point range while out-rebounding the Tribe 48-34. Sophomore forward Toia Giggetts added nine points and nine boards.

Emily Correal had 28 points for W&M.

EMU Opens Season 2-1

FERRUM — Third baseman Eddie McGrath went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, propelling Ferrum to a 7-6 win over Eastern Mennonite University in a non-conference baseball game Sunday.

The Panthers improved to 1-0; the Royals dropped to 2-1.

Junior left fielder Zach Bowles went 2-for-4 with an RBI for EMU, which left the tying run at third in the ninth.

On Saturday, in Rocky Mount, N.C., senior right-hander Casey Harlow pitched 3 2/3 shutout innings to help EMU to a 4-3 win and a sweep of North Carolina Wesleyan in the second game of a season-opening doubleheader

EMU won the opener, 3-0.

Junior first baseman Adam Posey went 3-for-6 in the doubleheader for the Royals.

Sohl Smashes BC Record

NEW YORK — Bridgewater College sophomore Luke Sohl ran the 5,000 meters in 14 minutes, 55.57 seconds, breaking the school record by more than 21 seconds at the Armory Collegiate Invitational on Saturday.

Sohl was the top Division III finisher and 11th overall in a meet that attracted more than 100 schools, including many from BCS conferences.

The previous school record was held by Nate Rittenhouse.

On the first day of the event Friday, the BC team of Sohl, freshman Nevin Heckman (a Harrisonburg High School graduate), senior Tim Wisniewski and freshman Sam Gunther set a school and conference record with a 10:17.20 in the distance medley relay, good for 10th place. The previous Old Dominion Athletic Conference record was 10:26.32 set by Lynchburg in 2003.
