8 Knights All-Region
HARRISONBURG – Turner Ashby High School — just 4-6 this season, but almost a co-champion in the Valley District — is well-represented on the All-Region III football teams.
In total, including honorable mention, Turner Ashby had eight selections – four on offense and four on defense – tying district co-champion R.E. Lee.
Senior defensive lineman Nic Moyers was TA’s sole first-team selection and made the second team at offensive tackle. Junior quarterback Evan Hanifee and senior wide receiver Justin Layman – the district leader in passing and receiving, respectively – also made the second team.
Broadway and Spotswood each had four selections, with a pair of first-team picks.
BHS seniors Dallas Harper (center) and Trevor Bostic (running back) made the elite list on offense, while freshman Nick DiPaola (punter) and sophomore Khalil Davis (kick returner) made the first-team for SHS.
Four other first-team selections were Valley players: Lee’s Tarren Clayton (defensive lineman) and Joe Moore (defensive back); Harrisonburg’s Hayden Rutherford (tight end); and Fort Defiance’s Cody Shifflett (guard).
Rockbridge County senior quarterback Porter Abell was named Offensive Player of the Year. Heritage senior linebacker Uriah Hammond and junior defensive lineman DeAnthony Muse shared the Defensive Player of the Year honor.
Royals Beat Goucher, 66-63
TOWSON, Md. – Junior guard Dajon Daniel had 19 points, five assists, five rebounds and three steals to lead Eastern Mennonite University to a 66-63 win over Goucher in a non-conference men’s basketball game Monday.
The Royals improved to 5-1; the Gophers fell to 2-4.
Junior guard R.J. Sims scored 20 points for EMU, including a dunk that made it 66-61 with less then a minute remaining.
Trae Lindsay had 13 points and 16 rebounds and Alex Noble had a game-high 22 points off the bench for Goucher.
