EMHS’s Bauman Retires
 
HARRISONBURG
— Eastern Mennonite High School boys’ soccer coach Kendal Bauman is retiring after 20 seasons, the school announced Thursday.

“I feel 20 years is a great run for any coach, and it’s time to pass the torch to a new leader for the program,” Bauman said in a statement. “I have the utmost confidence that the Flames will continue to flourish under new leadership and that the groundwork that I was privileged to lay will enable the school to reach new heights.”

EMHS went 321-99-17 under Bauman, who was hired in 1992, and won Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association state championships in 2007 and 2011.

EMHS also won 13 Virginia Independent Conference titles and went 209-25-4 in league play.

Bauman will continue to teach physical education and health at EMHS.


Miller School Girls Basketball 60, EMHS 26: Rachel Odumu scored 13 points to lead the second-seeded Miller School to a 60-26 win over No. 3 Eastern Mennonite High School in the Blue Ridge Conference girls’ basketball semifinals Thursday in Charlottesville.
 
The Mavericks improved to 22-7; the Flames fell to 19-6.

Sophomore forward Alesha Melendez had 10 points to lead EMHS, which has qualified for the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association state tournament.

The Flames play Tuesday. The opponent and location are to be determined.

Pendleton Girls Basketball 57, Moorefield 39: Junior center Hillary Ord had 11 points and 12 rebounds to lead Pendleton County High School to a 57-39 win over Moorefield in the semifinals of the Region 2, Section 2 girls’ basketball tournament Thursday in Franklin, W.Va.

The Wildcats improved to 12-7; the Yellow Jackets fell to 6-17.

Senior forward Raven Turner and junior guard Kaylee Edwards also had 11 points for Pendleton, and senior guard Nicole Hedrick had nine points and seven assists.

The Wildcats will play Pocahontas in the sectional title game Saturday at Petersburg at 7 p.m.

Senior forward Shana Vetter led MHS with 11 points.
