Artisan Trail Gets A Name

Shenandoah Title Meant To Recall Folk Song

“Handmade treasures, locally grown goodness and breathtaking beauty around every bend,” has been chosen as the slogan to best represent Shenandoah County.

After four months and hundreds of submissions, both a slogan and a name were selected by the tourism office and interested residents for the Shenandoah County branch of the Artisan Trail Network.

The name “O Shenandoah County Artisan Trail” was unveiled by Tourism Director Natalie Wills at last week’s Board of Supervisors meeting.

The Artisan Trail Network is a statewide tourism program that promotes local businesses, craftsmen and artists by bringing them together in a coordinated marketing campaign.

The program has already taken root in several Virginia cities and counties, with individual “trails” in such localities as Nelson, Albemarle and Augusta counties as well as the cities of Staunton, Waynesboro and Charlottesville.

Supervisors decided to bring Shenandoah County into the fold in June.

The goal of the network, organized by the Artisans Center of Virginia, is to create a comprehensive guide of locally operated restaurants, bed-and-breakfasts, markets and craft vendors that may normally be harder for tourists to track down.

During her June presentation to the board, Sherri Smith, executive director at the Artisans Center of Virginia, noted that choosing a name is usually one of the more difficult parts of the process.

“It’s been no easy task,” Wills said last week.

According to Wills, the “O” in the trail name is meant to be reminiscent of the folk song “Oh Shenandoah,” which she believes will be widely recognized.

“The beauty of this trail is that it unites so many groups outside of what people traditionally think of as art. By uniting [businesses, artists and craftsmen], we showcase the many aspects that make Shenandoah County unique,” said Jenna French, executive director of the Shenandoah County Chamber of Commerce.

The O Shenandoah County Artisan Trail already has 35 registered sites. Business owners in the county may still apply for a spot on the trail at www.artisanscenterofvirginia.com.
