Books To Go
Library Headed For New Location
Posted: January 23, 2013
Broadway’s library will close Friday, Saturday and Monday while its contents are moved into its new location on Main Street.
Village Library, a branch of the Massanutten Regional Library system, will move from 113 S. Central St. to the old Ace Hardware building at 175 N. Main St.
“We have lots of volunteers signed up to help for the move,” said Barbara Andes, the branch manager.
Volunteers include the Broadway High School baseball team and Boy Scouts, as well as members of the Tenth Legion 4-H, Broadway-Timberville Ruritan, Rotary and Lions clubs, Andes said.
The new location will increase the library’s square footage from 1,700 to 5,000.
“We’re really looking forward to having more space for our library collection,” Andes said. “Our current space is very crammed.”
The conversion, which created a meeting room, a children’s area and quiet-reading space, required a lowered ceiling, drywall, construction of a circulation desk and new shelves and furniture.
Plans to move Village Library, MRL’s third-busiest branch, originated in 2007, said MRL Director Lois Jones, and came to fruition only through a community effort that included private fundraising and donations.
The project, however, remains about $100,000 short of the $300,000 fundraising goal needed to complete expansion, Jones said.
Help also came from the town of Broadway, which has leased the space to MRL at no charge, Jones said.
In exchange for the rent-free lease, Jones said, the Broadway Police Department will move into the former library building.
“We are so thankful that our branch has always been blessed with such a supportive community,” Andes said.
