HARRISONBURG — A crash early Sunday morning near Linville ended with a car on its roof submerged in a creek and four people injured.

Sgt. Les Tyler of the Virginia State Police said the investigation began shortly after 3 a.m.

Tyler said a 2007 Honda coupe, driven by Casey Williams, 22, of Fulks Run, was traveling eastbound along Melrose Road when it ran off the road, struck a guardrail and bridge, then rolled down an embankment.

Tyler said the vehicle landed on its roof and was submerged in about 2 feet of water. Alcohol appeared to be a factor in the crash, which occurred just off U.S. 11, according to Tyler.

A medical helicopter flew Williams to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.  Her condition was unclear Monday afternoon.

Williams’ three passengers were taken to Rockingham Memorial Hospital by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries, police say. Their identities were not released.

Tyler said no one in the car was wearing a seat belt.

Tyler said the investigation is ongoing, but as of Monday no charges had been filed.
