Police Say His Car Crossed Centerline, Ran Into Truck

HARRISONBURG — A Broadway man died Friday afternoon after his car collided with a cement truck near Mauzy.
Sgt. Les Tyler with the Virginia State Police said emergency crews responded to the crash in the 800 block of Mayland Road around 1 p.m.
Tyler said Jay Kenneth Leatherman, 64, was driving a 2001 Subaru westbound on Mayland when he swerved and crossed the centerline.
He struck a 2003 Mack cement-style truck driven by Daniel Paul Smith, 39, of Waynesboro.
Police say Leatherman died at the scene of the crash.
Smith was taken by ambulance to Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Tyler said he did not know Smith’s condition but said a trooper was able to interview him at the hospital.
Police say it’s unclear what caused Leatherman to cross into oncoming traffic.
The wreck remains under investigation, police say.
Troopers on the scene were assisted by a state police Motor Carrier Safety Team and an Accident Reconstruction Team.
Both lanes of Mayland Road were closed for about three hours as officers investigated the crash.
