Constitution Meant For ‘Common Good’

Posted: March 7, 2013

According to James Kerwin’s letter, the USA is a collection of states only for their own protection (“Obama Took The Low Road, Don’t Believe His Lies,” March 1). This is far astray from what the Constitution states as its primary function. Among others, a significant reason is the states working together for the “common good” of all its citizenry,

Under Kerwin’s idea who and how would taxes be collected, and who would determine how spent? Would each state be responsible only for its own representative, senators, roads, militia, health care, education? I believe all of these are of national and international importance. Which ones would you turn over just to the states and the “common good” of all?

My greater fear than what you speak of, Mr. Kerwin, is when governors act like dictators.
