Council To Review Urban Gardens
Public Hearing Set For Proposed Regs
Posted: March 9, 2013
HARRISONBURG — City Council will hold a public hearing Tuesday on the proposed establishment of regulations for “business gardens” in Harrisonburg.
Last month, the Harrisonburg Planning Commission voted unanimously to recommend council approve the ordinance.
The regulations would allow urban gardeners in residential and central business districts to profit from fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers grown on their property. The issue arose after a pair of residents on Collicello Street inquired about selling their homegrown produce, only to find the city’s code prohibited such activity.
The ordinance change would permit Harrisonburg homeowners and renters to acquire a free home-occupation permit for a so-called business garden.
The proposal has been met with some resistance, with one Collicello Street resident stating that traffic and the presence of mice, snakes and hawks all increased because of another larger-scale garden on the street.
The public hearing is at 7 p.m. in council chambers, at 409 S. Main St.
