Mother-Daughter Class To Teach Dating Safety

Posted: November 13, 2012

Since young people seek storybook romance at early ages, the Rockingham County Recreation Department aims to educate both mothers and daughters on safe dating practices during its first-ever Teen Dating Safety class today.

The free workshop will be held from 6-8 p.m. at the Fire and Rescue Administrative Building, 20 East Gay St., Harrisonburg.

Destry Thomas, athletic technician, says the inspiration for the workshop came after several middle-school students approached him with questions about dating and relationships. Seeing a real need for answers, he decided, “It’s something that needs to be done.”

The class is open to “tweens,” primarily grades six through 10th. Organizers welcome mothers to join in the discussion and to take away information that might be helpful if tough situations arise in their own daughters’ dating lives.

Among the topics to be covered include ways to recognize and avoid emotional, verbal, physical and sexual abuse.

Thomas also hopes to provide handout materials for middle-school physical education teachers, with the goal to hold a similar class in the future.
