6th Dist. Rivals Get Ready To Rumble

Goodlatte, Schmookler Debate Monday At TA

Posted: October 13, 2012

BRIDGEWATER - Sixth District opponents Bob Goodlatte and Andy Schmookler will square off in their only local debate Monday morning at Turner Ashby High School.

The 10:30 a.m. event is expected to draw as many as 500 local high school students to the school’s auditorium, leaving about 150 seats for the public, said Bill Kyger, a government teacher at TA and member of the Rockingham County Board of Supervisors.

That means people should arrive early, he said.

Rep. Goodlatte, R-Roanoke, seeks re-election to an 11th two-year term in Congress on Nov. 6. Democrat Schmookler, an author from Shenandoah County, is a political newcomer who labels the incumbent as a contributor to a “political force” that is dividing the country.

Goodlatte, whose priorities include balancing the federal budget and scaling back government regulations, has won with at least 60 percent of the popular vote in each of his re-election bids.

Kyger said the candidates will give statements and answer questions from area high school seniors on such topics as the economy, defense and health care.

“They’re very juiced up,” he said of the students.

The debate is scheduled to end at 11:30 a.m.

WHSV-TV3 will stream the event live online, Kyger said. WVPT, Harrisonburg’s public television outlet, will rebroadcast it at some point, he said.

WSVA-AM also will carry the event live, and WMRA, a National Public Radio affiliate in the city, will at least record it. Both radio stations should then have the debate available for download afterward, Kyger said.
