Dr. Obama, Heal Thyself

Last week, House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan dashed off a letter to Jeff Zients, acting White House budget director, in hopes of finding out when his panel might see President Obama’s 2014 budget proposal.

Mr. Ryan, as best we can determine, was not being needlessly provocative. It’s just that the standard Feb. 4 deadline for such a presentation is looming — and the president has a history of not meeting it.

Only once since taking up residence in the White House has Mr. Obama forwarded his budgetary document on time. Mr. Ryan’s office notes that this rather dubious record marks Mr. Obama as the most “brinksman”-like president of modern times. It’s also instructive to point out that but one budget has been approved over this same span.

And yet Mr. Obama had the temerity to say, as the clock ticked down on the “fiscal-cliff” negotiations, that “America wonders why it is in this town why you can’t get stuff done in an organized timetable. Why everything has to always wait until the last minute.”

The president went on to say Americans are running out of patience with a government so dilatory in its performance. Hmmm, what’s that old saying, “Physician, heal thyself”?
