HARRISONBURG — One woman has died and a man is in fair condition after a head-on collision Tuesday night near the intersection of Va. 42 and Buttermilk Creek Road, about two miles north of Harrisonburg.
Darlene Piotrowski, 60, of Singers Glen, died Wednesday at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville as a result of injuries sustained in the crash, according to Sgt. Les Tyler of the Virginia State Police.
At about 7:50 p.m. Tuesday, Daniel Ringgold, 63, of Harrisonburg, was driving south on Va. 42 in a 2000 Oldsmobile sedan when the vehicle crossed over the centerline into the northbound lane, colliding head-on with Piotrowski’s 2006 Pontiac Vibe, Tyler said.
Piotrowski and Ringgold were flown in separate medevac helicopters to U.Va. shortly after the crash.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Ringgold was in fair condition, said Jason Ellis, a hospital spokesman.
A crash-reconstruction team arrived on the scene Tuesday night and continued its investigation Wednesday, Tyler said.
The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office and Harrisonburg Fire Department also assisted.
The accident remains under investigation, and no charges had been filed as of Wednesday afternoon.
