ERHS Wins, 58-54

Wright Nets 14 Against Nottoway

CREWE — It was a battle of an old school against a new one – and the new guys prevailed.

East Rockingham, in just its third year of existence, beat Nottoway 58-54 Wednesday night in the Region B, Division 1 boys’ basketball quarterfinals, keeping pace with the school’s girls’ team and setting the stage for a battle with a backyard rival.

Senior forward John Wright led the Eagles with 14 points.

ERHS now gets a date with a very familiar foe: Page County, which beat Amelia County 68-51 in another quarterfinal Wednesday. The two Shenandoah District teams will meet in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Friday at Eastern Mennonite University.

The game was “history” for East Rockingham, according to coach Mark Palmer. The Eagles have never advanced this far in their brief history.

“This was a great win for our program. Nottoway is fast and quick,” said Palmer as he hurried to catch the team bus.

Wednesday’s game was close throughout, with almost constant lead changes. Neither team had a double-digit edge at any time.

Even though Nottoway was a three-hour bus ride from Elkton, East Rock appeared to have more fans — or at least they made more noise than the home crowd.

The game began with a fast pace and never slowed down. East Rock took an early 10-2 lead, with seven points from Tyler Hensley, but Nottoway repeatedly came back.

East Rock led 49-43 midway through the fourth quarter, and Hensley hit a big 3-pointer to give the Eagles a 52-45 lead. It moved to 54-45 with just 3:27 remaining. East Rock then burned a minute with a freeze until only 2:14 showed on the clock. With less than one minute left, it was 56-47 and the game was almost sealed. The Cougars fought back, but could come no closer than four points.

Shaquan James scored 13 points for East Rock, while Hensley finished with 12. Joseph Gooden had nine points.

For the home club, Deontray Anderson scored 15 and Tre Burtt contributed 12.

The first quarter ended with the Eagles up, 15-14.  But the Cougars moved ahead and led by four, 29-25, at the half.

Neither team was particularly sharp from the line, though Nottoway made enough free throws to keep the game close. The Cougars made 11 of 23, while East Rockingham sank just five of 19 from the line.
No. 5 seed East Rock is now 14-6, and like the more celebrated ERHS girls, they are in the regional semifinals.

No. 4 seed Nottoway finished the season, 9-13.
