Feral Cats A Danger To Wildlife

Posted: February 8, 2013

The spay and neuter part of Jane Steele’s letter is OK (“Fix, Then Release Feral Cats,” Feb. 2). The release I have a huge problem with.

Do you know how many songbirds and how much wildlife is destroyed by feral cats? It numbers into the hundreds of thousands every year. It isn’t just feral cats either. Any cat who is allowed to have the run of the neighborhood is just as bad.

The city officials you mention “go after” the cats that your organization releases back into the park for this very reason — to protect the wildlife. That is not “pathetic” at all, and you are making their job harder. I don’t care how many “caretakers” you provide, or how much food you supply, a cat allowed to wander is a threat to wildlife.

It’s in the genes to hunt, whether its belly is full or not.
