Fire Destroys Cabin Near Toms Brook
Posted: February 9, 2013
A blaze destroyed a cabin near Toms Brook Thursday night while two people were vacationing there, officials say.
John Collins, Shenandoah County Fire and Rescue public information officer, said firefighters were dispatched to the cabin off Headley Road around 9:15 p.m.
“[Upon arrival], first fire and rescue units found the entire cabin in flames,” he said.
Another cabin only feet away was in danger for a short time as well.
“Firefighters had challenges with live power lines that were [felled] during the fire,” Collins said.
Units had to transport water to the scene and refill from the North Fork of the Shenandoah River, which had them on the scene until after midnight. The structure was a total loss, and an estimate of the damage is still being tallied by the fire marshal.
The two people vacationing at the cabin at the time of the fire and their dog were not injured, Collins said.
Fire and rescue units responded to the scene from Toms Brook, Woodstock, Strasburg and the county.
The cause of the fire was still under investigation Friday.
