SHS Girls Win, Clinch Top Seed
 
PENN LAIRD
— Senior guard Bailey Williams scored 15 points to lead Spotswood to a 54-37 victory over Waynesboro High School on Tuesday as the Trailblazers clinched the top seed in the Valley District girls’ basketball tournament.

SHS improved to 20-1 overall, 11-0 in the Valley; the Little Giants fell to 6-15, 5-6.

Junior guard Tayler Dodson and sophomore guard McKenzie Jenkins each scored 13 points for SHS, which honored its three seniors Tuesday: Williams, Miranda Delaney and Grace Propes.

Williams holds the SHS career records with 1,469 points, 540 assists and 523 steals. She also is the winningest player in school history at 86-15.

Waynesboro was led by sophomore guard Bri Moore’s 19 points.

Harrisonburg Girls 53, R.E. Lee 35: Junior forward Sydney Knupp scored 21 points to lead Harrisonburg High School to a 53-35 win over R.E. Lee in a Valley District girls’ basketball game Tuesday in Staunton.

The Blue Streaks improved to 9-8 overall, 4-7 in the district; the Lee Ladies dropped to 4-17, 0-11.
Junior center Sara Shenk-Moreno scored 17 for HHS and senior guard Keyana Whitley-Duncan added 12.

Freshman guard Secret Bryant led Lee with 12 points.

EMHS Girls 47, Rappahannock County 18: Junior guard Alex Black scored 15 points to lead Eastern Mennonite High School to a 47-18 win over Rappahannock County in a non-league girls’ basketball game Tuesday in Harrisonburg.

The Flames improved to 15-3; the Panthers dropped to 1-13.

Junior guard Lauren D’Agostino had nine points and six rebounds for EMHS.

Maddie Kopjanski led Rappahannock with six points.

Luray Girls 43, Page County 28: Junior guard Sable Ponn had 10 points and 13 rebounds to lead Luray High School to a 43-28 win over Page County in a Shenandoah District girls’ basketball game Tuesday in Shenandoah.

The Bulldogs improved to 15-7 overall, 8-6 in the district; the Panthers dropped to 8-13, 3-11.

Freshman guard Katie Keyser added 10 for Luray.

Freshman forward Katelyn Gordon led Page with eight points.


SHS Boys Notch 20th Win, 74-56

— Senior forward Hyrum Weiler scored 19 points to lead Spotswood High School to a 74-56 win over Waynesboro in a Valley District boys’ basketball game Tuesday.

The Trailblazers improved 20-1 overall, 11-0 in the district; the Little Giants dropped to 10-11, 4-7.

Senior forward Austin Nicely scored 18 points and junior guard Tucker McCoy added 13 for the Blazers.

Sophomore guard Stowe Graham led Waynesboro with 18 points.

East Rockingham Boys 68, Riverheads 59: Senior guard Tyler Hensley scored 16 points to lead East Rockingham High School to a 68-59 win over Riverheads in a Shenandoah District boys’ basketball game Tuesday in Elkton.

The Eagles improved to 12-5 overall, 8-6 in the district; the Gladiators dropped to 3-11, 7-13.

ERHS earned the fourth seed for the upcoming district tournament, and will host Luray on Friday at 7:45 p.m.

Senior forward Kyle Wilson scored a game-best 25 for Riverheads, while junior center Joseph Gooden and junior guard Chase Comer scored 10 apiece for East Rock.
