Lyndhurst Man Charged In Hit-And-Run Death

Posted: January 30, 2013

A Lyndhurst man is dead and another is under arrest following a fatal hit-and-run in Augusta County Tuesday night, according to Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corrine Geller.

The crash occurred shortly after 8 p.m. in the 800 block of Va. 664 near Lyndhurst.

A 2007 Urban Classic moped being driven by Keith E. Cox was traveling north on Va. 664, also known as Mount Torrey Road, when it was struck by a passing vehicle, Geller said in a statement. The vehicle then fled the scene. Cox, 47, of Lyndhurst, was wearing a helmet but died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash, Geller said.

With the assistance of the Wilson Volunteer Fire Department, which responded to the scene, Trooper J.G. O’Gorek was able to track down the suspect vehicle at a Lyndhurst address, according to the statement. Further investigation by the trooper led to the driver of that vehicle, Robert J. Wilkenson, 53, being charged with one felony count of hit-and-run, Geller said.

The investigation is continuing, though it is not clear if Wilkenson might face additional charges.
