HARRISONBURG — A 5-year-old Mountain View Elementary School student was transported to Rockingham Memorial Hospital Friday morning with minor injuries after a 2008 Nissan Altima rear-ended the bus he was riding in.

The crash occurred around 7:20 a.m. on U.S. 33 near Bridger Road, said Virginia State Police Sgt. Les Tyler.

“[The] school bus had just finished picking up children when it was struck from behind,” Tyler said.

School officials said 12 children, all elementary school students, were on board at the time, but only one child was hurt.
The driver accused of ramming the bus, Jason Lee Boggs, 20, of Brandywine, W.Va., also was taken to RMH. He has been charged with reckless driving.

“Fatigue appeared to be a factor on the part of Mr. Boggs,” said Tyler, who did not know the severity of Boggs’ injuries. According to an RMH spokesman, Boggs was not at RMH as of late Friday morning.

“We brought another bus to the scene and loaded those students and they were taken on to school,” said Cheryl Mast, director of finance for Rockingham County Schools.
