New Ambulance In Town

City Planners, Council Give Preliminary OKs

HARRISONBURG — A Hampton Roads-area ambulance company has received preliminary approval to operate out of an office complex on Pro Pointe Lane, bringing more than two dozen new jobs to Harrisonburg.

Medical Transport LLC will supplement existing ambulance coverage in the area primarily by providing routine transportation of dialysis patients, hospital discharges and other stretcher-based, nonemergency needs, said Treacy Landes, Medical Transport operations supervisor. The location, at 2060 Pro Pointe Lane off Lucy Drive, is less than two miles from Rockingham Memorial Hospital, which will be the company’s primary client.

Medical Transport will not respond to 911 calls unless the Emergency Communications Center requests it, city officials say.

The Harrisonburg Planning Commission on Wednesday recommended council approve a special-use permit for the company to operate on Pro Pointe Lane, and council will take up the matter next month.

On Tuesday, the council had approved a resolution granting Medical Transport permission to work within Harrisonburg’s city limits, which is a step required ahead of the special-use permit decision. All EMS providers must have local government approval to function, as required by the Virginia Department of Health.

The proposed site is zoned for general business uses, which means Medical Transport needs a special-use permit to operate there. Tenants of the office complex include Daniels Promotional Products.

According to Landes, the company runs nearly 120 ambulances in the state. In Harrisonburg, it plans to start with three squads, staffing an office around the clock.

Landes expects 25 new jobs to be created. They will be a mix of full- and part-time positions.

In addition to the Harrisonburg Rescue Squad, the city already has two private EMS companies: G&W Ambulance Inc. and Priority Patient Transport.
