HARRISONBURG — Harrisonburg Police say three armed, masked men robbed a city apartment and assaulted the resident Monday evening.

Around 6:40 p.m., police responded to the 400 block of Snowberry Lane, located in the Copper Beech housing complex, to a report of an armed robbery, according to an HPD press release sent out late Monday night.

The resident at the Copper Beech unit said the suspects assaulted him and demanded items, the HPD release said.

The suspects fled on foot before the authorities arrived, the release said.

According to a James Madison University bulletin, three male suspects, two black and one white, displayed handguns. The suspects were wearing dark clothing and masks, police say.

The apartment complex, located in southeastern Harrisonburg, caters to JMU students. Police had contacted JMU earlier in the evening about the incident. The university then released a warning to students about the crime.

When contacted before press time Monday night, police refused to comment.

The investigation is ongoing and police ask anyone with information to contact HPD at 434-4436.

The Daily News-Record will have more on this story as details become available.
