Nicely, Spotswood Rout Gobblers, 90-45

PENN LAIRD — Spotswood High School coach Chad Edwards refers to senior Austin Nicely as E.F. Hutton – because, like the stock brokerage firm’s slogan says, when Nicely talks, people listen. Edwards admits it’s a dated reference, as evidence by his players having no clue what he’s talking about.

Of late, Nicely’s teammates have been keener on chiding him for something much more modern: He hasn’t dunked in a game yet.

But, even after clanking one early Tuesday, Nicely said it didn’t bother him. He was plenty satisfied with the Blazers’ dominating 90-45 win over Broadway.

“Around school a little bit, [people say], like, ‘[Kevin] Saylor dunked before you,’” Nicely said with a smile, speaking of his sophomore teammate. “…It’ll come eventually.”

Nicely scored 16 points for SHS (18-1 overall, 9-0 in the Valley), which had a balanced night in winning by 35-plus points for the second straight game. Junior guard Tucker McCoy had 13 points, senior forward Hyrum Weiler had 13 and sophomore guard Khalil Davis added 10.

“I think we’re a better team when we do have balance like that,” Nicely said.

Nicely, a University of Virginia baseball signee, is playing more relaxed this winter in his secondary sport – at least, according to his coach. He doesn’t normally lead his team in scoring like he did Tuesday, but he does usually lead them in speaking.

“I think he’s the leader that’s kind of like the big brother,” Edwards said.

Senior guard Kenny Lohr had 14 points and Dane Spitzer added 10 for Broadway (3-16, 1-9), which trailed 39-22 early in the third before the Blazers exploded for 51 points in less than 16 minutes.

“Whether [we] determined this game was over before we started – which I wouldn’t want to think that about them – but we certainly didn’t come out with our best effort,” BHS coach Dwight Walton said.
