Obama Has Mandate To Tax The Rich
Posted: December 13, 2012
Republicans in Congress are whining that President Obama didn’t receive a mandate.
George W. Bush famously claimed a mandate, but at every point, his margin was smaller than President Obama’s. In 2004, President Bush won in the Electoral College 286 to 251, a margin of 35 votes. He won the popular vote 50.7 percent to 48.3 percent, a margin of 2.4 percent. He received slightly more than 3 million more votes than John Kerry.
President Obama won the Electoral College 332 to 206, a margin of 126 votes. He won the popular vote 50.9 percent to 47.3 percent, a margin of 3.6 percent. President Obama won about 4.6 million more popular votes than Gov. Mitt Romney.
One of Mr. Obama’s key campaign messages was that tax rates on the richest 2 percent of Americans should revert back to what they were under President Clinton. President Obama’s winning margins shows that Americans gave him a mandate to do this.
