Obstructionist GOP At Fault

The first response to Bush’s recession was bipartisanship. The banks and Wall Street were bailed out and various stimulus programs were planned, but once President Obama was elected, Republican strategists vowed to sabotage the recovery.
The original Obama stimulus was passed while the Senate was filibuster proof. After Sen. Ted Kennedy died, Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., used filibusters to kill every succeeding round of stimulus.
The House and Senate obstructed every extension of income support, unemployment benefits, income tax cuts, payroll tax cuts, and aid for veterans.
The Republican governors have also contributed to tilt districts to their favor and to reduce public employment, firing hundreds of thousands of teachers, public safety workers, and construction and transportation workers — anything to limit Obama to one term.
