Past Council Member Gets Back On Seat

Fulk, Appointed To Fill Position In Broadway, ‘Happy To Jump In’

BROADWAY — Broadway Town Council got a fresh face with seasoned experience when Leslie Fulk was unanimously appointed to fill a vacant position Tuesday.

The seat opened last month when Keith Clark moved out of Broadway into Rockingham County, making him no longer eligible to be a member of council.

“I was more than happy to jump in,” said Fulk, who served two terms on council from 2000 to 2007.

Fulk, 49, will serve the final 11 months of Clark’s four-year term on the at-large council; council members represent the entire town, not just a district, Town Manager Kyle O’Brien said.

Fulk didn’t run after his second term — which was cut short when Broadway changed from May to November elections — expired because one son, Taylor Fulk, 22, was going to play college baseball at Hagerstown Community College in Hagerstown, Md., and the other, Bailey Fulk, 19, was just entering high school.

“I had always thought that if given the opportunity, and the timing was right, I would certainly enjoy to be involved in [the council] once again,” he said.

Fulk, who owns Medical Removal Services LLC in Broadway — a medical waste management service — intends to run for another full term when the seat is up for election in November.

“That was part of the process,” he said. “[Councilmen said] they would like to choose someone who not only would fulfill the remaining 11 months of Mr. Clark’s term, but would run again for four years.”

Residents were contacted about the vacancy through the town newsletter, O’Brien said, and the position was posted on Broadway’s website. Ten applicants responded.

“In the past, a lot of times, you’d really have to look to find somebody that was interested,” O’Brien said. “It was a nice thing that you had that many interested and qualified people who want to serve.”

Fulk doesn’t bring a specific agenda back to the council, but looks forward to seeing what needs to be done.

“I told them I was willing to serve on whatever committee, wherever they needed me,” he said.
