Statewide Dem Seats, 15th District On Ballot

Posted: May 3, 2013

HARRISONBURG — The deadline for residents to register to vote in a pair of June 11 primary elections is May 20.

Virginians will go to the polls statewide next month to select a Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor and attorney general. Meanwhile, residents in the state’s 15th House District, which includes a part of Rockingham County, will be choosing a Republican nominee for the House of Delegates.

For lieutenant governor, Sen. Ralph Northam, D-Norfolk, and Aneesh Chopra, the nation’s former chief technology officer and now an adviser to a global research firm, are seeking the nomination.

In the attorney general race, the Democratic candidates are Sen. Mark Herring, D-Loudoun, and Justin Fairfax, a former U.S. attorney in Northern Virginia.

Nominees will face Republican competition in November’s general election. For attorney general, that challenger will be Sen. Mark Obenshain, R-Harrisonburg, or Del. Rob Bell, R-Albemarle.

Bell represents the Elkton area of Rockingham County in the 58th District.

In the 15th District Republican primary, Del. Todd Gilbert, R-Woodstock, faces Toms Brook resident Mark Prince, president of sales and service for Sunpeak USA Inc., a family-owned distributor of solar energy products.

Gilbert’s district includes areas in the county around the Broadway and Timberville town limits, plus all of Page and Shenandoah counties.

Three Rockingham precincts will be involved in the GOP primary: Lacey Spring, Tenth Legion and Plains.

The district’s nominee faces no Democratic competition.

An independent candidate could still file to run for office in November’s election by June 11.
