HARRISONBURG — Ed Smith, former assistant superintendent of Rockingham County Schools, and a founding member of the Rockingham Educational Foundation Inc., has been named as REFI’s interim executive director.
REFI is a nonprofit organization that raises funds to support Rockingham County Schools. The group awards grants and scholarships, supports programs and runs a teacher supply depot.
Smith will succeed Janet Wendelken, who is taking over as development officer for the Rockingham Memorial Hospital Foundation.
Smith, who is also a current member of the REFI board of directors and served as the organization’s first director, said he will use his long history with the organization to help guide the group through a goal-setting process for the future.
Smith said the process will involve examining core programs and determining how the organization can “best serve the students and teachers of Rockingham County Public Schools.”
“He is going to help us in this transition,” said REFI President Donna Harper. “As a board of directors, we are going to be reviewing all of our programs and services so we can make some strategic plans for the future.”
Harper said throughout the process, the group will develop plans for naming someone to take over the executive director position on a permanent basis.
