Ryan’s Budget Is Immoral
Posted: September 25, 2012
With Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan’s visit to Harrisonburg, let us pause to cut through the rallying hype and remember the devastating impact his proposed budget plan would have on many in our community.
After Ryan claimed his budget followed his Catholic faith, the U.S. Conference of Bishops rebuked his budget’s slashing of hunger and nutrition programs as morally “unjustified and wrong.”
The non-partisan Catholic organization NETWORK explains that Ryan’s budget would hurt Virginia by cutting more than $29 million from Head Start over two years, cutting more than $71 million from special education funding, eliminating Medicaid coverage for more than 700,000 Virginians, and eliminating more than 80 million meals for lower-income families. Meanwhile, his plan would help the richest Americans get even richer.
It is wrong to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy by cutting programs for the working poor. Simply put, Ryan’s budget
is immoral.
