SHS Rolls, 64-39

HARRISONBURG – By the time Spotswood High School coach Chris Dodson polished off his first of three Diet Pepsi bottles resting on the edge of the scorer’s table, the Trailblazers held a commanding 25-4 lead through 8 minutes and 23 seconds.

He never opened his third soda – a sign, perhaps, that Dodson didn’t need the extra caffeine on a comfortable night in which Spotswood never trailed.

Junior forward Tayler Dodson scored 17 of her 19 points in the first half and senior guard Bailey Williams added 18 as the Blazers defeated Harrisonburg 64-39 in their Valley District opener Tuesday night, improving to 3-0 overall.

“Neither one of those pressed early. I thought Bailey and Tayler both let the game come to them,” Coach Dodson said. “… It was really our – I call them the mini-teers, all those itty-bitty [players] that come in that nobody looks at. They were just knocking down shots.”

Senior Keyana Whitley-Duncan led the Blue Streaks (1-2, 0-2) with 19 points. But the depth and pace of Spotswood proved to be too much for HHS, which managed to win the turnover battle.

“We put in a game plan to try to slow the ball down in the first quarter and just didn’t do it,” said HHS coach Bill Bayer, who was pleased that his team kept within six points of SHS over the final three quarters.

The Blazers led by as many as 27 points when Dodson capped a 9-0 run with a drive between two defenders from the free-throw line with 4:14 left in the second quarter.

That’s when HHS put together its best stretch of the game. Junior forward Sara Shenk-Moreno scored on a baseline jumper and a layup – the first consecutive field goals for Harrisonburg – as the Streaks went on an 8-0 run.
