Southeast Connector Ingores Cyclists' Needs
Posted: February 1, 2013
The county’s decision to fast track the construction of the new Southeast Connector from Rockingham Memorial Hospital to U.S. 33 with limited public input is a decision that county residents will regret for decades.
Rockingham County only had one public meeting 30 days ago and the transportation department had no public meetings for this project. Not good planning.
This needed road improvement does not adequately plan for bicycle use or make any accommodations for pedestrians. Who is comfortable or safe riding on a paved shoulder that is not a designed bicycle lane with vehicles traveling 45-65 mph? How about walking or running? Is this something the residents of Rockingham County do not wish to do?
This portion of the county is seeing significant residential development and is connecting to one of the area’s largest employers, one that is in the health-care industry. We can do better!
