‘Startup Weekend’ Lets Entrepreneurs Make Pitch

Posted: February 27, 2013

HARRISONBURG — Organizers of an upcoming entrepreneurial-themed event are putting the call out for participants.

Harrisonburg Startup Weekend will be held April 5 through April 7 at James Madison University’s Showker Hall.

According to an invitation from organizers, Startup Weekend is a “grass-roots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures.” It provides the opportunity to pitch and develop business ideas.

A nonprofit organization of the same name is based in Seattle, but the idea has spread throughout the world, with 400 events in 100 countries in 2011, the release says.

The Harrisonburg event is sponsored by a coalition of governments, businesses and economic development organizations.

Participants can pitch a business idea, get feedback and then vote on the best ideas. Teams are then formed and spend the rest of the weekend creating a business model and developing coding, designing and marketing.

At the end of the weekend, teams present their ideas and get more feedback.

Participation is open to people with varied backgrounds, including entrepreneurs, artists and designs, and programmers and coders.

Registration is required and is limited to 114 people. It costs $75 to participate. Students receive a $10 discount.
