Toys For Tots Drive Continues

Deadline To Drop Off Gifts Dec. 14

Posted: December 8, 2012

HARRISONBURG — Now through Dec. 14, area residents can drop off toys at several locations throughout Harrisonburg for the Toys for Tots drive.

In Harrisonburg, toys are being collected at ComSonics, Dick Myers Chrysler Dodge Jeep, Fisher Auto Parts, Jenzabar, Joe Bowman Chevrolet, Lakeview Golf Course, National Business College and Tractor Supply. Skanska, a construction company renovating James Madison University’s Duke Hall, also has a drop-off site on JMU’s campus.

“We had an outstanding response last year and we’re hoping for the same response this year,” said Amy Smith, who is organizing the Augusta County Toys for Tots drive. “It is going good. I cannot say enough that I appreciate the businesses in the community that have stepped up and helped us.”

Because no one volunteered to organize a Harrisonburg or Rockingham County drive, the toys collected locally can be turned in to Smith to benefit the Augusta County drive. Smith said items collected are delivered to children in the county, as well as in Staunton and Waynesboro.

“If we had somebody in Rockingham County or Harrisonburg that could do it, then everything in Rockingham County would stay in Rockingham County,” Smith said. “I would love to be able to do it in Rockingham County if we had somebody who wanted to step up and coordinate.”

Brian Murray, vice president of operations for the Toys for Tots Foundation, speaking specifically about the Chrysler Dodge dealership, said via email that because there is no campaign in this area, toys collected could also be given to another area toy drive “to ensure local donations assist local children.”
