HARRISONBURG – In leading East Rockingham High School into the second round of the Division 2 state football playoffs, John Wright also got the attention of the Virginia High School Coaches Association.

Wright was the only Harrisonburg/Rockingham County player to be named to the VHSCA’s All-State first team in any classification. The awards were voted on Sunday and released this week.

Wright, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound senior, finished the season with 900 yards and six touchdowns on 60 catches for the Eagles (8-4). He said Wednesday he plans to play college football and is considering Division II Bluefield (W.Va.) or Division III schools Emory & Henry and Shenandoah.

East Rockingham also had two seniors selected to the all-state second team: offensive lineman Devon Butler and running back Sharif Price.

In Group AA, co-Valley District champion R.E. Lee had two all-state selections: junior defensive lineman Tarren Clayton on the first team and senior defensive back Joe Moore on the second team.

Seven area players made VHSCA’s All-Group AA honorable mention list, including two each from Broadway and Spotswood: seniors Trevor Bostic and Dallas Harper (BHS); freshman Nick DiPaola and sophomore Khalil Davis. Fort Defiance’s Cody Shifflett, Harrisonburg’s Hayden Rutherford and Turner Ashby’s Nic Moyers (all seniors) rounded out the list.

Riverheads led the area with five Div. 2 All-State first-team picks and six overall. Mike Herndon (offensive lineman), Logan Moore (running back and kick returner), Sam Goodson (place kicker) and Cody Swisher (defensive back) made first teams, while David King (tight end) made the second-team offense. Central tight end Kolton Poston and Strasburg running back Rakwon White also made the first-team offense. On the first-team defense, Strasburg defensive end Jonathan Kloosterman joined Swisher and three Wilson Memorial players: Qualik Rucks (lineman), Ricky Hanger (linebacker) and Malik Rucks (defensive back).

Second-team selections included: Central’s Zach Herbaugh (wide receiver), Cody Neal (defensive lineman) and Hamilton Argueta (linebacker); Wilson’s Joey DiGorga (defensive end); and Stonewall Jackson’s Juan Luna (punter).
