HARRISONBURG — A Dayton woman died and a Bridgewater man was seriously hurt after a single-vehicle accident Tuesday afternoon in the 6000 block of Lambert Town Road, almost a mile south of Briery Branch Road in Rockingham County.

Virginia State Police Sgt. Les Tyler said a 1995 Ford Explorer occupied by Crystal Larue McAlister, 42, and Robert Ray Rhodes, 47, crashed about 3:30 p.m.

Tyler said McAlister was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene, which was about two miles southwest of Ottobine.

Rhodes was taken to Rockingham Memorial Hospital, then airlifted to University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, where he was listed in good condition Tuesday night. Tyler had no information about the nature of his injuries.

Tyler was unable to confirm who was driving the SUV at the time of the crash.

The preliminary investigation indicated that speed and failure to use seat belts were factors in the wreck, he said.

The scene was still under investigation Tuesday night by VSP trooper H.L. Stover with assistance from a crash-reconstruction team.

The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office and the fire and rescue unit from the Clover Hill Volunteer Fire Company assisted at the scene.
