Wreck Disrupts Traffic On I-81

Three-Vehicle Collision Halts Southbound Travel

Posted: January 23, 2013

A three-vehicle wreck closed a portion of southbound Interstate 81 early Tuesday morning, but all the occupants escaped serious injury.

Emergency crews responded to the crash scene near mile marker 260, between Mauzy and New Market, around 6:40 a.m.

Sgt. Les Tyler of the Virginia State Police said a 2004 Peterbilt tractor-trailer driven by Ludomir Fabis, 54, of New Britain, Conn., was traveling south when the truck began to experience engine problems.

Tyler said Fabis was driving slowly to the right with his flashers on when a 2007 Ford F-250 pickup truck driven by Christine Grieve, 40, of Luray, struck the tractor-trailer from behind.

A few minutes later, a 1986 Ford Thunderbird driven by Robert Carroll, 87, of Ozone Park, N.Y., struck the pickup.

Both Fabis and Carroll where treated by EMS at the scene. Grieve was taken by ambulance to Rockingham Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

She was charged with reckless driving.

The southbound lanes of the interstate were closed for about an hour, causing a roughly three-mile backup, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
