The recent approval of a “seasonal rate” should have indicated that the true cost to residents is much higher (“City Joins ‘Green’ Challenge,” June 25).
Much of the “seasonal” use is outside, but the sewer charge based on the water charge remains, making the charge higher. Those of us who water outside to grow food for our families find this charge especially burdensome.
The City Council and Water Department should make full information on water charges available.
Perhaps Harrisonburg could do what other cities have done and give a discount to those who have water barrels or run the downspout discharge to lawn and garden. At least one hardware store in Harrisonburg has rainwater barrels ready to use for more than $100.
One can get used barrels (I got several from Dave’s Recycling for $5 just before the fire). Add $8 to $12 for faucet and screened intake for keeping roof debris and mosquitoes out, plus $4 for paint brings the cost of a barrel to less than $25.
Greening scores should include rainwater harvesting and rain gardens.
