Betty Jean Smith

Betty Jean Smith, 84, of Harriston, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018, at Sentara RMH Medical Center. Jean was born Sept. 10, 1934, a daughter of the late Joe W. and Lillian (Derrer) Martin.

She was a member of Grace Memorial Episcopal Church in Lynnwood.

On Oct. 17, 1953, she was united in marriage to Claude J. “Jack” Smith Jr., who preceded her in death on May 4, 2015.

Jean is survived by a daughter, Jennie Beverage and husband, Scott, of Franklin, W.Va.; sister, Peggy Smith of Keezletown; brothers, Norman Martin and wife, Norma Jean, of Harrisonburg, and Carl Martin and wife, Agnus, of Criders; three grandchildren, Jason Beverage (Christina), Sumers Wilson (Andrew) and Ashley Graves (Davy); and nine great-grandchildren.

She is also preceded in death by a son, Claude Joel Smith III and siblings, Raymond Martin, JoAnn Shifflett and Joyce Harbin.

A memorial service will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018, at Johnson Funeral Service in Grottoes with Chaplain David Kite officiating. Burial will be private.

The family would like to thank her special caregivers, Brenda and Charles Shifflett for all the loving care they provided.
