Donald "Duke" Lynn Simmons, 70, of Dayton, passed away Friday, June 28, 2019, at Hawksbill Assisted Living in Luray. Donald was born Jan. 11, 1949, a son of the late Doris Lilly (Allman) and Owen E. Simmons Sr.

He retired from VDOT in Mount Crawford after 23 years of service and was a member of the Spring Creek Church of the Nazarene.

On Aug. 29, 1970, he was united in marriage to Shirley Jean (Smith) Simmons, who preceded him in death on June 26, 2009.

Donald is survived by a son, Willie Simmons and wife, Laura, of Timberville; sisters, Terri Bragg and husband, Jimmy, of Harrisonburg, and Susie Simmons, of Harrisonburg; brothers, Owen E. Simmons Jr., of Harrisonburg, Nelson K. Simmons and wife, Linda, of Harrisonburg, and Timmy W. Simmons and wife, Lisa, of Harrisonburg; grandson, Tristan B. Simmons and fianceƩ, Christina Parker, of Timberville; and many nieces and nephews.

He is also preceded in death by a sister, Patsy A. Simmons.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at Briery Branch Church Cemetery with the Rev. Deborah Cline officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.
