James Franklin Grandle, 96, of Keezletown, passed away June 15, 2018, at his home. Mr. Grandle was born Aug. 8, 1921, in Keezletown and was the son of the late David Oscar Darrell Grandle and Katie Mae Royer Grandle.
He was born and lived in the same area of Keezletown his entire life except for the time of three years, one month, and 29 days, that he spent in the Army during World War II. He was a mechanic and served in France after training at several bases in the U.S.
Mr. Grandle returned to the home he was born in and lived there until his passing, working as a farmer until his retirement.
After retiring, he enjoyed woodworking, broom-making, gardening, reading, traveling, and playing bingo. He made many pieces of furniture for family members. He read almost 1,000 books in the last six years. He visited more than 35 states.
He was a member of the Mountain Valley United Methodist Church for nearly 70 years, where he had served as church trustee, treasurer, communion steward, and served on various committees for many years. He also served as a director of the Mountain Valley Cemetery Corp.
On Nov. 12, 1947, he married Beulah Kline Grandle, who preceded him in death on April 28, 1993. He was also preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Ruth Phillips and Marie Hensley and two brothers, Floyd Grandle and Melvin Grandle.
Mr. Grandle is survived by sons, George F. Grandle and his wife, Riky, of Powell, Tenn., and Roy Grandle of Keezletown; daughters, Linda Grandle of Lenoir, N.C., and Rachel Staton and husband, William, of Keezletown; three granddaughters, Kathryn Human and husband, Wesley, Jamey Bolding and husband, Brian, and Nora Anderson and husband, Andy; two grandsons, Matthew Staton and Timothy Staton; five great-grandchildren, Nico, Zack, Daniel, Erika, and Clara; special friend, Patricia Klinger; longtime caregiver and friend, Joyce Miller, and caregiver, Judy Reedy.
Pastor Mary Lock of Mountain Valley United Methodist Church and Pastor William Staton of Bethel-Keezletown Church of the Brethren will conduct the funeral service at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, at Mountain Valley United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Mountain Valley Cemetery.
Family visitation will be 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 18, at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
