Nelson Elwood Showalter

Nelson Elwood Showalter, 78, of Broadway, Va., passed away June 11, 2019, at Sentara RMH Medical Center. He was born Aug. 21, 1940, in Rockingham County and was a son of the late Wade Vance and Dorothy Berry Showalter.

Nelson worked at Neff Lumber Mills for 25 years without missing a day before retiring. He was a proud auctioneer. He loved car shows and bluegrass music. He was a U.S. veteran.

On Nov. 25, 1970, he married Arvilla Mae Showalter, who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Ricky Lee Showalter; one granddaughter, Tiffany Alice Showalter; three sisters, Ruby Pence, Pearl Keister and Marie Combs; and many other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Connie Sue Showalter; brothers, Richard and Clarence Showalter; and his sister, Nina Zirkle.

Pastor Ken Fox will conduct a funeral service noon Friday at Cedar Run Church of the Brethren in Broadway. Burial will be in the Whitmer Family Cemetery in Fulks Run.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway.

Memorial contributions may be made to Cedar Run Church of the Brethren or Grandle Funeral Home to help with funeral expenses.
