James V. Edwards

James V. Edwards, 78, of Parsippany, N.J., passed away Thursday, Aug. 2, 2012, at his home.  James was born in Cumberland County, Va.

James proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1951 until being honorably discharged in 1954. He served on the Paterson Police Force for 34 years and held the rank of captain when he retired in 1995.

He was predeceased by his sister, Christine Parsons. Survivors include his beloved wife, Mary; his sons, Mark and his wife, Margie, and Paul and his wife, Teresa; his stepsons, Randy Shipe and his wife, Debbie, and Danny Shipe and his wife, Donna; his stepdaughters, Sharon Balint and Kim Harper and her husband, Gary; his brother, J.R. Reedy and his wife, Betty; his sisters, Judy Crawford and her husband, Melvin, and Gladys Gelisse; his grandchildren, Douglas Edwards and his wife, Ashley, Steven Edwards and Megan Edwards; and his stepgrandchildren, Rachel, Rebekah and Seth Harper, Christopher and Tyler Balint, and Lance Shipe and his wife, Hanna. James is also survived by his many nieces and nephews.

Pastor Dale Goodwin will conduct a funeral service 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012, at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Harrisonburg. Interment will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
