Houston D. Martin

Houston “Wimpy” Darrell Martin of Elkton died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012, surrounded by family.

Mr. Martin was born Nov. 22, 1932, in Augusta County. He was the son of the late Samuel Houston and Effie Martin.

Mr. Martin served in the Navy during the Korean conflict and retired from Merck & Co. as an electrician in 1998. He had a love and knowledge of the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting. He often found and refurbished fishing poles and gave them out to children along the rivers he fished.

Mr. Martin was preceded in death by brothers, John Lloyd Martin, Ralph Martin, Fred Martin and Billy Martin; and sisters, Joyce Virginia Shifflett and Stella Martin.

Mr. Martin is survived by his wife, Sarah Martin of Elkton; sisters, Rose Wilson of Swoope, Shirley Lanum of Staunton, Doris Harris of Greenville, Bernice Stump of McGaheysville, and Diane Rice of Roanoke; children, Samuel Martin of Steeles Tavern, Regina Corbin (husband, Carl) of Staunton, Fred Martin of Manassas, Adele Ray (husband, Larry) of Grottoes, and granddaughter, Loretta Dove of Harrisonburg, raised in the home; stepchildren, Darrell Kuehle Jr. (wife, Melissa) of Elkton, Chad Kuehle (wife, Samantha) of Mount Jackson, and JoAnna Smith (husband, Justin) of Mount Crawford. Mr. Martin also leaves numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as his longtime friend and fishing buddy, Bert Fidler.

The last months of his life Mr. Martin was lovingly cared for in the home of Donna and Filemon Resendiz of McGaheysville.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012, at McGaheysville United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Lagerveld officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. The family will also receive friends at the home anytime.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the McGaheysville Fire Department, 80 Stover Drive, McGaheysville, VA 22840.
