H.F. Karnes

H.F. Karnes Jr., 71, of Shenandoah, passed away Aug. 28, 2012, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Karnes was born June 8, 1941, in Harrisonburg, and was the son of the late Henry F. and Daphna Harris Karnes.

He grew up in Shenandoah but moved to Hagerstown, Md., in his youth. He graduated from South Hagerstown High School in 1959, and attended the University of Maryland at College Park. He served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1964 where he was a member of Army Counterintelligence and served on the staff and faculty of the U.S. Army Intelligence School at Fort Holabird, Md. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service.

He was a member of the St. Peter Lutheran Church and was past master of the Ashlar Lodge No. 125 in Shenandoah, Luray Royal Arch Chapter No. 4, was past commander of the Luray Commandery No. 19 and a member of the American MENSA. He was production manger at Genie Co., where he worked from 1965 to 2004. He enjoyed gardening and sharing his bounty with family and friends. He retired to the banks of the Shenandoah River, where he enjoyed its beauty and serenity.  

On July 1, 1966, he married Eleanor McCoy Karnes, who survives. Also surviving are sons, Henry F. Karnes III and wife, Leanne, Shenandoah, and Randal Good, Luray; grandchildren, Logan Karnes, Jessica Gray and Lucas Good; and a great-granddaughter, Zoie Gray.

By his request, all services will be private.
