Shenandoah — Elsie Virginia Comer Batman, 99, of Shenandoah, passed away Dec. 8, 2012, at Bridgewater Home.
Elsie was born Dec. 11, 1912, in Shenandoah, and was the daughter of the late Amos Jackson and Ada Florence McDaniel Comer. Elsie grew up in Shenandoah, and graduated from Shenandoah High School and Madison College. She retired in 1972, after 31 years with the Page County Public Schools. She was past president of the Page Co. Education Association, secretary treasurer and president of District G. Teachers, treasurer of the Shenandoah High School Alumni Assoc. and President of the Page Co. Retired Teachers. She was a longtime member of the Christ United Methodist Church, where she served as choir director, organist for 30 years, Sunday School Teacher, trustee and served of the administrative board.
She served as chaplain and president of the Gideon Auxiliary.
On June 21, 1947, she married Jesse Louis Batman, who predeceased her Oct. 13, 1981. Surviving is a daughter, Janet Williams, Shenandoah; granddaughter, Terye J. Williams, Shenandoah; nieces, Mary C. Morehead, Martha C. Smith, Ginny Jones and Judi C. Fields.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by son-in-law Joseph Williams, great-grandson, Cody Williams; brothers and sisters, Gertrude Robins, Owen Comer, Roy Comer, Vista Crowley, Anna Mae Comer and Mildred Comer; niece, Lois M. Williams.
Rev. Stephen Creech and Pastor Jimmy Kite will conduct the funeral service 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton. Burial will follow in the Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. The casket will remain closed.
