Bertha N. Matthews

Mrs. Bertha Newell Matthews, 89, a resident of Harrisonburg and Timberville for the past 20 years, died Dec. 10, 2012, at Winchester Medical Center, where she had been a patient for the past week.

A daughter of the late William and Myrtle Bennett Remphrey, she was born Sept. 12, 1923, in Elmira, N.Y., and attended schools in New Jersey. She worked at a publishing company in Princeton, N.J., as a proofreader. She and her husband enjoyed retirement in South Carolina and Florida before she moved to Virginia.

Her husband, Charles Matthews, preceded her in death. Surviving is her daughter, Sharon Kyger and husband, Billy, of Port Republic; her sister, Mary Hand, and husband, Larry, of Luray; and a number of nephews.

Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg is handling arrangements and online condolences may be sent to the family at www.lindseyharrisonburg.com.

All services will be private, there will be no viewing.
